What we collect, in plain words.
ShrimpGuide is an ad-supported content site. We keep data collection to the basics needed to run the site and show advertising, we do not sell your personal information, and this page lays out exactly what happens when you visit.
Last updated June 2026Who this policy is from
This policy covers ShrimpGuide, the website at shrimpguide.com. In the text below, "we" and "us" mean ShrimpGuide, and "you" means anyone visiting the site. By using ShrimpGuide, you agree to the handling of information described here.
What we collect
We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not run a shop, so we collect very little. What we do collect falls into two simple groups.
Information collected automatically
Like almost every website, our hosting and analytics record standard technical details when a page loads. This typically includes your approximate location (from your IP address), the type of device and browser you use, the pages you view, and the site or search that sent you here. This is aggregate, behind-the-scenes data about traffic, not a profile with your name on it.
Information you give us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to write. We use that only to reply and to handle your message. We do not add you to a mailing list or pass your address to anyone else.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files a site stores in your browser. We use them for two purposes: to understand how the site is used so we can improve it, and to support the advertising that keeps ShrimpGuide free to read. Our advertising partner may also use cookies and similar technologies to show relevant ads and to measure how they perform.
You can control or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time, and you can opt out of personalized advertising through the links in the next section. Blocking cookies will not stop you from reading the guides.
Third party services
We rely on two Google services to run and fund the site. Each has its own privacy policy, and each lets you control your data directly.
- Google Analytics We use Google Analytics to see which guides are read and how people find the site, in aggregate. It sets cookies and processes the technical data described above. You can read more in Google's privacy policy, and prevent Analytics tracking entirely with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.
- Google AdSense Advertising on ShrimpGuide is served through Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other sites. You can manage or turn off personalized advertising in your Google Ad Settings, and find more options at aboutads.info.
How we use it, and what we never do
We use the information above to keep the site running, understand what is useful so we can write more of it, display advertising, and reply when you contact us. That is the full list.
We do not sell your personal data
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. The only third parties that receive data are the service providers named above, and only so the site can function and stay free to read.
Your choices
You are in control of most of this from your own browser and your Google account.
- Cookies. Clear or block them in your browser settings whenever you like.
- Personalized ads. Turn them off in your Google Ad Settings, linked above.
- Analytics. Opt out site-wide with the Google Analytics add-on, linked above.
- Your message data. Email us to ask what we hold from your correspondence, or to have it deleted.
Children
ShrimpGuide is a general-audience aquarium resource and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
If our practices change, for example if we add a new analytics or advertising tool, we will update this page and revise the date at the top. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated policy.
Privacy questions
If you have a question about this policy, or a request about your data, get in touch and we will answer in plain language.
